Today was my first day of being a cadet teacher, and overall it was great! There's two teachers in my class, Ms. Aikins, and I forget the name of the special education teacher. They're both very nice and welcoming. The class environment was very colorful and comfortable. The first half of the class everyone was learning long division, then the class broke into groups to practice what they had learned. I got help one group in the front of the room. One problem I did have was when, Ms. Aikins pulled a student to the side and was talking to her about how she doesn't do homework, and that her grade in the class is low. The problem was that I could hear the private conversation all the way in the front of the class when they were in the opposite end of the room. Because this has happened to me before I felt bad for the student, she might have been embarrassed. Other than that I had A great time and everyone in the class was a lot of fun.

Today was jersey day, so when i git a chance to talk to the kids we talked about our favorite sports teams. The class continued to work on long division. Today the division was a little harder because they had to divide larger numbers by a three digit number. It was a slow day, we just reviewed what the class learned and did extra practice work. Before i left me and Mrs. Aikins got to talk about what i'd like to learn, and take away from the class before the course ended as well.

  3. Remember to reflect. Don't just tell me what happened.

Reflecting on what I learned in fifth grade math at Fountain Woods, I realized how behind they are. As a fifth grader you had to come in knowing how to do long division and we worked on PEMDAS, or order of operations. Overall the kids are very smart and catch on very fast. We continued to do our long division unit to practice for the weekly online assessment coming up on Tuesday. Mrs. Aikins had the class break into groups to finish a couple of practice problems and learn from one another. Then later we played a review game before I left.

When I came into class the students were taking their weekly assignment we studied for on Tuesday, after the weekly assignment we went to the Renaissance Rally. I thought I missed those, but after hearing the yelling and screaming, I couldn't wait to leave. It did make me happy to see how excited the kids were, it brought back old memories, like getting awards for perfect attendance, most improved, and high honors. Mrs. Aikins had a meeting during the rally so I had to watch the kids. It felt different being the teacher in the chair, instead of the kid on the gymnasium floor, but the Rally was fun.

Today the kids started a new unit, Estimating Sums and Differences, I got to see how Mrs Aikins really teaches a new lesson. Because the kids are learning to do these problems differently than I learned in fifth grade, I took the notes along with the children, so when I have to teach or help them I won't confuse them. I noticed Mrs. Aikins teaches the kids the work in steps to help them remember how to solve the problems easier. I also noticed that a lot of kids found it hard to remember when to to estimate and when not to. So I reminded them to look for the word "about" which indicates to estimate. When we went over the homework from the night before, and I had to check everyone's one kid "couldn't find it," so I had to give him a zero. It was hard because you don't really know if the child is telling the truth or not. I just have to toughen up.

I got to go over last nights homework with the class, I didn't expect to do it today so I was a little caught off guard. Surprisingly I wasn't nervous at all, I basically asked what the children got and they told me their answer. It was a great experience, and I didn't realize how fast I learned their names just by checking their homework yesterday. What I didn't like about going over the homework was if a student got the answer wrong we didn't go over it. We called on another student for the answer. Later we used another learning method, which was playing a game. I noticed that the flaw in the game was letting them play in the hallway, because they got too loud and started to disrupt classes. Overall we had a lot of fun.

Today The students were able to demonstrate their knowledge of lessons one through three in chapter five, by doing a few focus questions then taking a quiz. After their quiz the children finished their Greece brochures making the day a little slow for me. So, Mrs. Aikins taught me how to do lesson plans since I never learned in Tomorrows Teacher's. She reminded me how writing lesson plans gets easier over time. I also learned that all teachers have to write a weekly lesson plan for each subject they teach and turn it in to the administrators. After that I got a chance to talk to some students for the rest of the time I had in the class. I loved how open and energetic they are. They make me want to teach younger students. One boy told me how he wanted to work with art but he also wanted to be a teacher, when I told him to become an art teacher he was mind blown. I think getting to sit and talk to the children was the highlight of my day.

Today I didn't think I'd get to go to my field experience. I had on the wrong pants, so I had to borrow Student A's pants. Because the pants fit too loose on me I couldn't go and would get a zero for two test grades. Then I found a pair of pants in my book bag and wore the cardigan in my locker. By the time I got there I didn't have a lot of time to interact with the kids, I graded social study quizzes and left. This day taught me to prepare, if I didn't have those pants in my locker there would be no coming back from that grade. So out of all the bad I did get some good out of it.

Today we had a sub and before I even got to the classroom the lady in the office told me the students were acting up. Hearing that made me nervous, but I made sure not to show the kids my nervousness. As soon as I walked in I told the students the information I heard from the office. I also told them how disappointed I was to hear they were acting up. I don't know if that worked but the class got their act together and started listening to the substitute. Then we just multiplied decimals by exponents and took a social studies test.

Originally I planned to talk to Mrs. Aikins about the Formal Observations on Friday but she was absent. So, we talked about it today. We were so late in planning so the only dates left were the third, fourth, and the twenty-second. We chose the third and planned out our lesson and what materials we needed. We also picked out homework and printed out so I could look over and see if felt comfortable teaching it. The whole thing made me nervous but I'm also very excited.
