Tuesday 11/14/17 Today was my first day in Miis Whartenby and Miss Cann’s 3rd grade classroom! It was a great experience and they were all very welcoming, including the students. On class today they are in reading stations and we had a trip to the library. Being back at the school roaming the hallways and seeing the library for the first time in years, was a very strange feeling. Observing these students was also very different for me after school I work as a primetime counselor and I'm used to seeing kids running, jumping and screaming around with lots of ebry. But, here they were calm and collective and Miss Whartenby had her classroom under control. She was kind enough to let me sit in and listen to one of the stations. I was so intrigued that I forgot I had to leave and it was 2 o’clock! Overall, it was a perfect first day and I can't wait to continue this experience and get to know everyone better!
Thursday 11/16/17 Today in Mrs. Whartenby and Me. Cann's 3rd grade class, there wasn't very much going on. Today they had their reading day, when they read the class book and answer the questions. Although, there was one thing that stood out to me. When some students answered the questions wrong, Mrs. Whartenby didn't just dismiss them. She explained to them why they were wrong and gave them another chance to answer. When students answered correctly, she always acknowledged it and complimented their work. Seeing this made me happy knowing that there are still teachers out there that care for their students and wants to see them succeed.
Friday 11/17/17 When I came into class Mrs. Whartenby was going over directions for the test they were about to take. Once she was finished the students started there test. For the time that I was there they were busy working on there test. So, I caught up on some reading for my English class and I helped one student with a question, which was hard because I couldn't just give them the answer. Also, Mrs. Whartenby had pulled three students to the back table to help them with there test. I guessed that they were students that needed that extra help from teachers. It made me think about out accommodations and modifications lesson and how as a teacher it is important to know how to help all my students.
Tuesday 11/21/17 (Absent) I was absent the day we went back to our classrooms. So, I was told to write a reflection on being in the wrong class for the last 3 field experience days. My first day I wasn't 100% sure, but once I met the teachers, they seem to know about the field experience and welcomed me with warm arms. It was not until the next day- Wednesday 11/22/17- that my actual field experience teacher emailed Mrs. Francis and asked her if a student was coming into her class. Then, Mrs. Francis called me down told me that all this time I had the wrong teacher. I honestly didn't know how to feel, but Mrs. Francis and I just had a laugh about it. And for my field experience tomorrow- Tuesday- I will be with my actual teacher Miss Yago. I'm excited to meet and be with my real class for this experience. All I can say is, this could only happen to me.
Tuesday 11/28/17 Today was the first day with my actual teacher Mrs. Yago. When I arrived the students were getting back from recess. Mrs. Yago let me stand in front of the class to introduce myself and the students introduced themselves to me. She told me that when I come to her class they'll be doing either math, cooking and sometimes social studies. I am so excited to be there for one of their cooking lessons. I also really enjoyed meeting the students. Being in a special education class was a different environment for me, but it was great experience. The other teachers in the room were very nice. Even the room itself was beight and warm, with pictures and posters all over the wall. I got to observe and help the students with their math work. I look forward to enjoying the rest of my field experience with this Class.
Wednesday 11/29/17 In the classroom today, I got to participate in the cooking lesson. The students made apple turkey's, which was pretty cool to see. I helped a student with counting her ingredients and putting it together. As all the students were working on their turkey's I noticed that special education classes differ from general education classrooms by how they are run. For instance, I notice that the teachers in the classroom have more patience than regular teachers. They have to make sure that their students fully grasp what they're learning and they can't simply move on to the next thing without making sure each student understands. Also, the class moves at a much slower pace. The teachers have to take the time to help each individual student according to their needs. This made me feel a little nervous and out of place. Only because I'm not used to being around special needs students and I feel like I don't know how to help them when they need it. But, Mrs. Yago talked with me and reassured me that it's just something that I have to adjust to and that I shouldn't pity them or treat them any different.
Thursday 11/30/17 In Mrs. Yago's class today, they were learning more math skills. They were learning something called "touch math", which is a multisensory math program designed for pre-K through third grade students. The program helps make math concepts easier and more accessible for students with different learning styles or learning difficulties. The approach uses auditory, visual and tactile strategies for understanding numbers and operations. I've personally never seen or heard of touch math and watching how it worked and seeing the students better understand adding and subtracting was very pleasing. Seeing them get so excited when they got an answer correct, was warming. I wish we were taught this when I was younger it would of made math much easier.
Wednesday 12/13/17 When I arrived to Mrs. Yago's class the students were practicing their math. Mrs. Yago asked me of I could run one of the math stations. I was very excited to do this because it was my first time really interacting with all of the students. My station involved a lot if hands on activity. I had to go over the different shapes with them. And also, go over how many sides each shape had. They got to trace it out in sand and write it on the board. I had lots of fun getting to know some of the students better!
Friday 12/15/17 When I arrived the class was wrapping up their math and were heading over to the other room to play some games. It was fun to play with all the kids. We played a memory game, bowling air hockey and tic tac toe. The other teachers also threw some math questions as the students were playing. It's true when they say time flies when your having fun.
Monday 12/18/17 Today in class, the students went to the other classroom to practice some sign language. I found this to be super cool and interesting. I've never been in a classroom where students were taught sign language. Personally, I've always wanted to learn sign language, so I was so excited to participate. We learned how to sign the days of the week, weekend, calendar and day. Seeing how well the students were doing was really cool. All day after that I was showing anyone I knew how to sign the week days.
Tuesday 12/20/17 In Mrs. Yago's class they had another cooking lesson. The students made chocolate covered pretzel rods and got to dip it in any type of sprinkles or colored sugar they wanted. I really enjoyed myself helping them. They tasted even better! She also let the students help with counting the ingredients and melting the chocolate. One of my favorite things about Mrs. Yago is that she always gets her students involved. Everyone gets a chance to voice in. I can't wait to see them again!
Wednesday 1/3/18 On my cold walk over to Mrs. Yago's class the students were cleaning up and their toys. They were getting ready to go over to Mrs. Abraham's classroom to make hot chocolate. When I came into the class all the kids yelled "Miss Emani your're back!" That made me feel so happy for the rest of the day. I also helped the students pour and mix their hot coca powder into their mugs. Mrs. Abraham's asked the students what their favorite thing to do in the snow. I raised my hand and said snowball fights. The kids got really excited and I had a good laugh. I felt like I was able to connect more with the kids.
Thursday 1/11/18 Today was a pretty slow day. The students were reviewing their lesson on telling time. They were also going over counting by twos and fives. Some of the students were having a hard time with the information. But, Mrs. Yago made sure that before she moved on to the next problem all the students were able to answer the question. And when some students wanted more of a challenge, she accommodated for them too. This made me think about how great of a teacher Mrs. Yago really is. There are many teachers that don't spend that extra time making sure all there students understand the information. We need more teachers like her that are patient and indulgent with their students. Especially, ones' that need that extra minute. Overall, I spent my time preparing for my lesson with Mrs. Yago.
Tuesday 1/16/18 Today there was a substitute so the students didn't really do much. They talked about wjat they did over the long weekend. Then the sub went over why we had off on Monday for MLK Day. She dicussed who he was and what he did for the country. She first asked the studcents if they knew who Marrtin Luther King was, and there was one kid who responded with so much depth and intelligence, I was shocked. I didn't think a kid his age would even know what life was like for African Americans in the sixties, let alone describe who Rosa Parks was. This just made me think more highly of them. There minds are more capable of learning and understanding information, just like other students.
Wednesday 1/17/18 Mrs. Yago was also not here this day, so we had another substitute. But, the kids had cooking class today and they got to make banana sailboats. Cooking classes are always my favorite because it's so fun to interact with the students and eat food! I was helping a student that was new to cooking class and it was his first time. I didn't have to do much because he already got it down, but it was still nice to help out. Every time we have a cooking class, it amazes me how the teachers can always throw in a Math or English question to get the students thinking. Overall, it was a fun, delicious day.
Thursday 1/18/18 Today I had my formal observation. I had to do a lesson for the class. For my lesson I reviewed with the students their vowels. And how some words only one vowel makes a sound. I had a lot of fun teaching this lesson. I was nervous at first, but my teacher was very encouraging. During my lesson I was happy to see the students enjoying the lesson and paying attention. At the end I felt I did a good job. The other teachers in the room and the students all gave feedback on how I did. Some of the students said I did and great or super job. That made me feel even better about my lesson.
Friday 1/19/18 In class today the students were doing math and going over how to tell time. I sat with in on one of the math stations helping the students with their shapes. Then I was split into my own station where I went over o'clock and thirty. It was pleasing to see the students progressing from when they first started. I even tried to challenge them a bit and they sill did an amazing job.
Monday 1/22/18 On my second to last day, the students were split up into different stations again for math. Again I saw patient Mrs. Yago is with her students, It makes me appreciate her more because I know sometimes it can't be easy. And as I'm sitting there at one of the station, I thought how fast this experience has been. I've enjoyed every moment with the kids and it's hard to believe that it's going to be over. I also decided what I was going to give my teacher and students. I can't wait for them to see it!
Tuesday 1/23/18 My last day in Mrs. Yago's class was a perfect way to end my field experience. When I arrived the students were wrapping up there games and were headed back to their desk. We did a go noddle to come everyone down. Once at their seats I handed out my gifts to the students and the teachers. I gave them all a thank card with some encouraging words for each of them with a big lollipop. For Mrs. Yago I gave her a card as well with a little trinket of a flower with the words "laugh" engraved on the pot. They all loved their gifts and they even had one for me. It cam with a teddy bear, bath and body works, m&m's, and two cards. One from the teachers and one from the students. I was so happy and grateful to have been apart of this class. I will be sure to stay on touch with them. I could've asked for a more positive and encouraging environment.

In what way is a special education classroom different than a general education classroom? Explain what you notice and how it felt.
